Waccamaw Intermediate is one of nine schools from around the state to be been selected as finalists for the 2019 Palmetto’s Finest Awards.

This selection comes after evaluations by a committee of fellow educators and previous Palmetto’s Finest winners. The application process includes elements on student achievement, instructional programs, professional learning communities, and school culture.

Last fall, 18 South Carolina schools submitted a 20-page application followed by an onsite examination visit from a review committee. The nine finalists are currently undergoing a second onsite evaluation before the winners are selected this spring.

The winners will be announced through a live stream to each finalist school at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19.

The other finalists are:

  • Mount Holly Elementary School, York School District 3 (Rock Hill)
  • River Springs Elementary School, Lexington-Richland School District 5
  • Kelly Mill Med Pro Magnet School, Richland School District 2
  • Mid-Carolina Middle School, Newberry County Schools
  • Nation Ford High School, York School District 4 (Fort Mill)
  • River Bluff High School, Lexington School District 1
  • Blythe Academy of Languages, Greenville County Schools
  • Spring Hill High School, Lexington-Richland School District 5

The South Carolina Association of School Administrators presents the awards each year to schools "which offer the best in innovative, effective educational programs." The Palmetto’s Finest Award is in its 41st year.

“We are excited to recognize some of the outstanding and innovative schools in our state. They represent the many excellent school communities serving South Carolina’s families,” said Beth Phibbs, SCASA executive director.
